What Is Astigmatism?

Like nearsightedness and farsightedness, astigmatism is a refractive error that can distort vision. A refractive error is the common name for a condition that prevents the proper convergence of light rays at the retina. This condition is very common and most people have some degree of astigmatism. When the degree of astigmatism is larger, the issue can lead to headaches and eyesight difficulties. With the help of an eye doctor, astigmatism sufferers can find relief from their vision problems. With an eye exam, an eye doctor can quickly diagnose patients with astigmatism. Depending on their prescription needs and style preferences, they may have several treatment options. Both eyeglasses and contact lenses can correct the symptoms of astigmatism. Should patients be eligible candidates, an eye doctor may also perform laser surgery which can help reduce the need for correction.
